RO Purifier. Essential for borewell or tanker water (salty taste) to remove heavy metals.
UV + UF. Perfect for municipal/sweet water. Retains minerals and saves water.
Gravity/Portable. No installation, no electricity required, and easy to move.
RO vs UV: The Real Difference
Filtration: RO (Reverse Osmosis) uses a fine membrane to remove dissolved solids (salts, metals) from water. It is "heavy duty." UV (Ultraviolet) uses light to kill bacteria and viruses but does not remove dissolved salts.
[Image of reverse osmosis filtration diagram]Water Wastage: Standard RO purifiers waste about 3 glasses of water for every 1 glass purified. UV purifiers waste zero water. If your water is already sweet (low TDS), using RO is wasteful.
Minerals: RO strips water of everything, including healthy calcium and magnesium (unless it has a mineral cartridge). UV retains the natural mineral composition of your water.
The Heavy Hitters (RO for High TDS)
Kent Grand+ (RO+UV)
The king of Indian ROs. Features a TDS control valve that lets you adjust mineral content manually.
- 9L Storage Tank
- TDS Controller
- UV in Tank
- 4 Year Service
HUL Pureit Eco Water Saver
Saves up to 80 bottles of water daily compared to other ROs. High recovery rate with mineral cartridge.
- 10L Large Tank
- Eco Recovery Tech
- 7-Stage Filter
- Smartsense
The Smart Savers (UV for Low TDS)
Aquaguard Aura (UV+UF)
Best for municipal water. Active Copper technology infuses ions and UV e-boiling kills bacteria instantly.
- Active Copper
- Zero Wastage
- Instant Flow
- Sleek Design
Kent Ultra Storage (UV+UF)
Most UV filters lack a tank. This solves power-cut issues with a built-in 8L tank for storage.
- 8L Tank
- High Power UV
- Computer Control
- Fully Automatic
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Feature | RO Purifier | UV Purifier |
|---|---|---|
| Best For | Borewell / High TDS | Municipal / Low TDS |
| Dissolved Salts | Removes 90%+ | Does not remove |
| Water Wastage | High (Reject water) | Zero |
| Electricity | Required (Pump) | Required (Lamp) |
| Maintenance | High (Membrane + Filters) | Low |
Expert Analysis: Solving the Dilemma
Problem 1: "I don't know my TDS."
You shouldn't buy a machine without knowing this number. Buy a TDS Meter for ₹200 online. Dip it in your tap water. If the number is < 200, you are wasting money on an RO.
Problem 2: "My water tastes salty."
Saltiness means high dissolved solids (Calcium, Magnesium, Chlorides). Only RO can remove this taste. UV will kill bacteria, but the water will still taste salty/bitter.
Problem 3: "I am renting/shifting."
Avoid heavy wall-mounted RO units. Go for a Gravity Based (non-electric) filter or a simple UV unit like the Aquaguard Aura which is easy to uninstall and carry.
